Very well stated, Chris.
My partner and I are raising two girls ages 12 and 16, and we are absolutely a family. No, we can't enjoy the benefits that civil marriage would afford us. No, we don't have a lot of support from society at large. But we are committed to one another, and that has to be enough for now (we live in Texas.)

What's encouraging is that we have both visited our kids' teachers at school together and have seen no issues at all. Most of the teachers are just happy the girls have two parents who are involved in their schooling.

Keep up the good work and the great blog.

I made a killing off of barretts with ribbons and beads that I made as a teenager. I blame my baby sister for getting me into it but they sold quite well.

Hi. I read your post and I really, really liked it. However, you left out the most amazing story in our Country's history in regards to the Civil Rights movement. I'll add it's by no fault of your own, as its often forgotten and not taught in our schools. But, before Rosa Parks' historic bus sit-in, Emmitt Till died, and his Mother changed the face of Jim Crow forever. It really is an amazing story. I had the absolute privelege of meeting this incredible woman, Mamie Till-Mobley, about a year before she died. It changed me forever. The pictures aren't on the website, but you can find them on google, if you choose.

I just want it to be clear that not all active mormons are supporting these intiatives. Some of us prefer to follow the teachings of Jesus and you know-love one another. I will tell you thought that as I talk to other LDS friends about this issue-the level to which you support the church's stance seems to be directly proportional to how few gay people you actually know. Jed came to stay with me for one weekend and suddenly my Prove born and bred roommate was lecturing her Arizona sister about how no one should be denied marital rights. I consider myself part of your extended family chris and jed and one of the many reasons i'm sad i don't live in california anymore is that I wouldn't get to vote HELL NO on Prop 8.

I feel like I voted on the issues and all... but I have to admit, I'm also excited for the first president our children will remember strongly to be one that broke so many barriers for a minority group that, not too long ago, seemed to be standing firm.

Though the issues of race are different from gender, it gives me more hope for what's possible for our families, and I'm sure our children can sense that. I just hope the map is as blue on election day as the polls say.

I can't wait.

As a family that has also had to deal with discrimination against my family. It just breaks my heart when I see others being discriminated against. Because my children have Autism most insurance companies will not cover them because of their diagnosis. Your family runs into some of the same discrimination because you are in a gay relationship. I think both are wrong. I look forward to the day when both of our families are treated fairly.

Chris: Enjoyed your comments to David Sundwall's Prop 8 post. Things are looking pretty tight right now and you aren't the only one feeling attacked. I consider myself a faithful Church member but like Kengo I am disappointed and disgusted by the fear-mongering, half-truths and myths being spread by the Church about this issue. Whichever way this ends up, I think the consequences for the Church in California are not going to be good. I sure wouldn't want to be a missionary there right now.
